How Important Are Service Resets and Adaptations in diagnostics?
Service resets and adaptions (or relearns) are essential for a wide range of repairs, from simple repairs like an oil change or battery replacement, to more advanced systems like Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). Not only do they ensure that the parameters of replaced components are correctly returned to factory specifications, they also play a vital role in preventing component damage and maintaining the safety of vehicle occupants.
With the right equipment and access to the correct procedures via your OBD diagnostic tool, resets and adaptions not only help reduce the likelihood of a customer returning to the shop, they also protect components and ensure the vehicle is safe for its occupants. Taking that extra moment to check and complete any necessary adaptations can save you and your customer time.
What is the difference between Resets and Adaptations?
- Resets: Service Resets are procedures that return a parameter to factory defaults after a new part has been installed. Common examples include resetting the oxygen sensor, changing the fuel filter or changing the engine oil. These resets are quick and are used to ensure that the vehicle operates to original specifications after parts have been replaced.
- Adaptations: These "teach" the Engine Control Module (ECM) to adapt to a new part installed, whether it's a throttle body recalibration, a turbine or a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).
Why are they essential?
Avoiding service resets and adaptations can have unfortunate consequences. Imagine a customer returning dissatisfied because the service light stays on or the MIL comes back on due to an adaptation not performed. These post-repair steps also protect against customer dissatisfaction and the need for them to return to the shop for the same problem.
